RE: What size toy hauler can my truck handle?

IMHO that is a good fit for your truck. Things to remember is that toy haulers are going to have an HEAVY empty pin weight. Thatis because the mfgs know that you are going to put 1000# of toys BEHIND the trailer axels which will result in a reduction of pin weight.
If you have a 5th wheel hitch on your truck ask the dealer for a test pull. then judge for yourself. You (as a pro driver) know what an over loaded truck feels like.

RE: Will the real RVIA classification please step up.

your right...it would be a very similar #. it does not necessarily denote that it was built to be an RV. BUT if it were an rv then that number could ONLY be a class B. NOT an A or C
coming off the line one van may go to Roadtech the next one right behind (Identical) it may be going to an up fitter to have shelving to become a delivery van.

RE: Will the real RVIA classification please step up.

I ask the same Q to my dealer...I'll tell you what he told me, maybe BS but makes sense.
You can buy an RV thats not RVIA certified, thats why its listed as an 'mandatory option' (oxy moron). Second RVIA was a set of build and safety standards that the industry imposed upon itself. They did this because having 'generally accepted practices' reduces the liability of the mfgs. sorta like building codes protect builders from law suits. I dont' know when they came up with the plan but it changes slightly every year
As for the VINs telling you what RV was on the chaises. It sure can. the VIN is the # given to the chaise, based on what leaves the ORGINAL mfg. An B is going to be a fully mfg van body, an C is going to be a cut away van body and an A is going to be an empty med duty rolling chaise. From the looks of it a super C would be a cut away med duty chaise. In other words if you were to decode the vin of a box truck its vin would be similar to the VIN (similar sized and make) of an rv.
Up fitters (in this case RV mfgs) can give the unit a serial # but the VIN is from the chasie mfg.

RE: New North Carolina Law...

Some of these laws can get confusing real quick. Here in PA you can have an "C" class which is any single or combo less than 26,000#. But if you have a "B" class your TV can be over 26K but you can't tow more than 10K.
I have a friend who was in this situation: he is dump truck driver, (by trade) he needs a "B" class DL. But this guy owns a Raptor toy hauler which is over 10K. Technically, he is illegal to drive his personal truck and trailer on the weekend. But his wife with an "C" class is legal, because the rig is less than 26K. does he drive it YES, has anyone ever gave him problems about it, NO.
one of those weird gray that it looks like NC decide to fix.

RE: Hitching Up

Never used them but they sound like they would work. I am usually pretty good if i am able to come straight back in to it. if the truck and trailer are at any sort of angle (like hooking up in my yard at home) then i am in trouble. BTW i too had the "if you can't see the mirror i can't see you" conversation with my DW.

RE: sway bars are they worth it?

Use a friction-type. differance between it and nothing is night and day. I have used a cam-type when i moved a buddy's trailer and it wasn't any better or worse than mine...that being said both trailers (mine and his) are less than 6000# and i was doing the towing with a 3/4 ton truck. if the trailers were closer to the limits of the truck I may have noticed a differance.

RE: Washing RV with car wash and lamp oil?

Be careful with Dawn...it works well, too well. It is intended to remove oils which is what wax is. it works well if you are going to rewax but if you aren't going to rewax then the washed area is left without the protection of the wax.

Must be built better than most other rvs....they have trouble keeping rain from coming in the roof.

RE: Border Difficulties

I suppose they do have a tracking method for multiple attempts but the second time we were 'just waved through' meaning that the guy glanced at our passports and ask where we were heading and how long we were going to be. Unless they photograph the car (maybe they do??) or would have ran out passports the guy had no way of knowing.
Talk about tough...try going north with your Canadian girl friend. Better be ready to give your life story on that one, especially if you have a FL DL!

RE: Border Difficulties

Honestly, I'd try going to another crossing. sounds like the border agent was having a bad day. my buddie was turned back because of a 6 year old DWI conviction. we simply went to the next crossing and crossed without issue. OH BTW your address is your HOME...if asked let it at that if you can.

RE: Keeping Warm - safe and inexpensive.

use your heaters and AC's that is why you have them, but to leave the AC's run for 10 hours while you are at the beach just so you have a cool place to return to, is just plain silly... but it happens often, very often...
Have you ever done an energy study of your home? The reason i ask is that I used to think like you. I'd turn off my heat (at my sticks and bricks house)every day. what the study taught me was that its better to keep the house slightly warmer durnign the day than to try to heat from 45degrees every evening.
with that being said i'd bet that in the summer rv and its AC isn't much different. I am thinking that its better to let the ac running (on a fairly warm setting) when its 105 outside. Don't know for sure because there are SO many variables to the equation. what i do know is the my compressor and fan run on HI for about 4 hours to cool a 100 degree trailer then it will start to cycle on and off. where as if i let it on it seems to cycle on and off being off more than half the time.
my thoughts on using a 1500 watt elecric heater is that its not using anymore electricty than my AC would. which i am sure is figured into the cost of the site (which isnt' reduced on cool days when its not running). It would seem to be a bit greedy to use 2 or 3 of them...

RE: Cold Weather Plumbing Issue

problem solved.
Honestly if they are enclosed and depending on the area you are camping in i think they'd be ok till this time of year...
Remember you when the temp reaches 32 things don't just flash freeze. I have camped in my TT with tanks exposed and not heated in temps with night time lows in the mid 20s without problems.

RE: Ideas for hot shower without de-winterizing?

well it would be cold but what about one of the "instant shower" systems. the ones that i am thinking of are the out door type with the little portable stall of plastic or canvas type thing. but i guess there are 2 problems with that...1) the grey water issue your shower water goes on the ground. and 2) most are propane powered, perhaps she would feel better if it were outside?

RE: What is Piston Slap?

I have a 6.0L with 180,000 on the clock, lots of slap on cold starts. Uses about half a QT of oil between 5,000 mile oil changes. IMHO piston slap is nothing to worrie bout.

RE: I want to order a 2009 truck, nobody wants to sell one!

We have been looking for a car for the wife to drive to work and the dealers are BEGGING us to buy. we haven't yet be cause she can't make up her mind, but thats another story. Most of the places around here only have one sales person and the manager selling because its SO SLOW. we went out to a local dealer last saturday and the place was EMPTY we were the only customers in the place. sorta felt bad for the guys...
My point is that i am superised that these guys aren't jumping all over you for a sale. Maybe things aren't as bad in your area???
